lgf: Pace University Koran Case - Unbelievably Outrageous

I'd truly love your opinion on this. While I feel it is wrong to place a Bible, Koran or any other book of worship, in the toilet, I feel it's almost heinous to charge this guy with, not one but two felonies. The act is wrong but does the charge merit ruining this fellas life? You be the judge...

Pace University Koran Case - Unbelievably Outrageous

I’ve received an email from Stanislav Shmulevich, who has been arrested in New York for putting a Koran in a toilet at Pace University. And his case is even more outrageous than we first reported.

First, Shmulevich was arrested and jailed for 24 hours. Second, he’s not facing misdemeanor charges—he’s being charged with two felonies, criminal mischief and aggravated harassment.

Felonies. For putting a book in a toilet. Read More

It seems ridiculous. Would you get the same treatment for tossing a bible in the toilet? Why didn't he say it fell in by accident? That can happen.

LOL--well, just in case Little Green Footballs or any other stomp-a-raghead-for-Jesus site needs cooling down, I'm saving my Bible for the next available toilet.

Miz UV, it does seem a bit outrageous, does it not? The riotous implication is bad enough.

Archer, I stumbled onto that and am not familiar w/the site. But it sure makes me feel like flushing something...

I honestly don't think we know the whole story here.

If the guy was all by himself i am sure this wouldn't be an issue... but why on earth would it be a big deal if someone knew that he did this? Well, for example, if he was being predjudicial and this was a harrassing jesture, he sure does desirve the charge. And I am guessing that there must hav ebeen some transgretion, or it surely wouldn't be a big deal.

But, I also agree that airing this nature of incident in the media was just as good as giving the guy a death sentance. There are alot of truly pissed off people out there, and you do not want to be the target of their wrath.

But for the record on this "The Koran is just a book" nonscence... no matter who you are. It is a religious icon, much the same as any other bible, saint statue or rosary. And with that, should come some respect. The sooner we accept the differences between our human cultures, the better off we all will be.

Yeah I agree with everything here, but we do live in a free country and whatever I want to flush, Im fucking flushing!

Xmichra, you may be right. He may have done it, in front of the person, much like a hate crime? I don't know what to make of it. But even so, I have to wonder if it should be a felony charge, ya know?

DirtyBitchSociety said...

Woogie, I would never do that to anyone but I've yet to hear of someone going to jail for throwing a Bible in the toilet, ya know? It's ridiculous!

That's the whole point though, you are minimizing what happened. You think of it as flushing a book (i am not saying YOu, i mean in the broader sence) where at the time that it was done, it was (assumingly) done as harassment.

If the sittuation was modified, to a Father of a five year old who was jeering and taunting the chid saying how stupid make beleive toys were and how stupid the child was and he flushed the childs fairy doll in the toilet, THAT in the court is harrassment. And dude would get charged.

I see no difference (if this is the sittuation.). Flush what you want to flush, but if you are doing something in hatred.... it's a whole different story there. "Free" is only as free as the court allows.

.. Kind of like setting the American flag on fire if you will...

Xmichra, I have no qualms with this guy getting a charge. I happen to think that two felonies, is pretty rough. He didn't flush it, I think he dropped it in the toilet. It's not right, by any means, but a felony is as serious as it gets.

2 felony charges on this shit - for dumping a Koran in the toilet? Yeah...lol - he should have said "ooops, I didn't mean to drop that thing!" Is the media going to face felony charges for inciting riots? If I could contribute to the guy's legal defense, I would. The world has gone mad!

Brotherray, yea, I understand the importance of laws and governing but this is so way out therem, it makes you wonder, just what is fair and what is not?

I mentioned this on my political blog today. Basically, it's political correctness taken to an obscene (and, apparently, criminal) degree.

I doubt the charges hold up to constitutional scrutiny. That whole "free speech" thingy is a bitch to leftist propaganda tools that run universities today. There is a First Amendment right to free speech, but there is NO constitutional right to be free from offense.

Basically, you are allowed to exercise your right to free speech, even if it offends the hell out of me (such as archer's dumbass comment). However, we've been treated to "Piss Christ" and the Virgin Mary coated in elephant dung as publicly subsidized works of art (i.e. "expressions of speech", at the taxpayer's expense), mainly because it is deemed politically correct to offend Christian sensibilities.

But flush a Koran, and Allah help the poor bastard...he's going to jail, pal!

Woogie's 100% right: if she wants to flush the Koran, the Bible, the Satanic Verses, Gone with the Wind, or whatever, it's her damned right to do so, regardless of WHO doesn't like it!

A. Meba,

That was friggin' hilarious!

i am pretty sure i said "if" alot. meaning that IF there was hatred, it's a whole new game. But if the guy just dropped it.. i see no harm and think it's over the wall crazy.

It all depends on the action itself. Didn't even need to be the Koran if it was hate inspired (like i said afterward).

But i also happen to think that way about anit-christianism and all the other crap that people do. It's just degrating as a species.

I would certainly hate to be the judge sitting in on that though. There is going to be some fear of not passing judgement the "right way" and that would suck. On the one hand you minimize, on the other you maximize. No real win there.

..oh, and you definately have 'the right' to flush what you will. Never argued that. But, actions sometiems speak louder than words, and sometiems they land you in more trouble than you can imagine. Or with far less respect.

DirtyBitchSociety said...

A Meba, Oh my, a different view point. I can see your misfortune. This must be your crusade.

DirtyBitchSociety said...

Jonathan, I agree with you. Of course, free speech is one thing, it is words but actions are another. I would take offense if someone, through hate threw my Bible in the toilet, this is certain. But I don't believe it should be felonious. But it has certainly caused a shit storm and they will play upon it. Yes, I agree with you!

DirtyBitchSociety said...

Xmichra, I agree with you. This judge will be judged, either way. I hope he can see his way to being fair and just. I imagine the guy did it w/ a malicious intent and I think he should be punished for that. It is in a category of a hate crime, I'm sure but I do think a felony charge, which will haunt him for life(I know, first hand, I have 7)and ruin any chances of getting a good job, unless he's lucky.
